BIO4COAT PROJECT

Biobased building blocks from biorefinery for safe diamond-like and biopolyurethane coating solutions under extreme and demanding conditions of use and end of life

BIO4COAT aims to create biobased coating solutions designed to withstand extreme and demanding conditions. To this end, BIO4COAT is targeting the production of key renewable building blocks like 1,4-biobutanediol (1,4-bioBDO), long-chain dicarboxylic acids (lcDCA), and biomethane.

BIO4COAT will validate two novel value chains: the conversion of 1,4-bioBDO and lcDCA into biopolyurethanes (bioPUs) for demanding industrial applications, and the transformation of biomethane into diamond-like coatings (DLC) suited for extreme environments. These biobased coatings will be tested across eight sectors, ranging from plastics processing and hygiene to agriculture, energy generation, and floor painting, demonstrating their robustness and versatility.

BIO4COAT adheres to the European Commission’s Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles, ensuring that all developments are aligned with the EU's environmental and safety goals. By validating these innovative coatings at TRL5 and creating at least ten prototypes, the project sets a strong foundation for industrial scalability and integration into existing biorefineries.
