Ecosystem project

Emerging eco-active materials by sustainable tools from natural renewable residues

ECOSYSTEM aims to develop innovative, multifunctional biopolyesters and active bio-based ingredients obtained using sustainable technologies and agricultural residues as feedstock. These bio-based components will be used as building blocks for the fabrication of mulching films and food and pharmaceutical packaging, ensuring safety and sustainability throughout the bio-based value chain. At the end of the useful life, the produced plastic-based products will be reused or biodegraded, closing the loop of an efficient and collaborative circular strategy.

ECOSYSTEM will be the first project to combine mechanochemistry and white biotechnology to obtain bio-based and biodegradable polymers and other eco-active materials. The project will show that new bio-based polyesters can replace PET-based products by more environmentally friendly and sustainable options with improved performing barriers and upgraded properties.

The project is inspired by the synergies and dynamics carried out by the biotic and abiotic components of a close ecosystem; where waste biomass, raw materials, monomers, polymers and products will form a value chain that interacts thanks to sustainable tools. The project goals are strongly aligned with those of the EU Green Deal and the Circular Economy Plan.
