HALO-TEX Project

Halophyte Biorefinery Process for Sustainable Production of Textiles, Composites, and High-Value Biochemicals

HALO-TEX showcases a new, sustainable, and circular way to produce bioproducts by refining salt-tolerant plants into valuable materials. The project focuses on creating cellulose-based yarns and fabrics with better recyclability, as well as bio-based additives and composites, aimed at demanding sectors like textiles and biochemicals. To help these new bio-based products gain acceptance, the project includes studies on consumer perception and develops clear product information systems.

HALO-TEX project directly supports key EU strategies, such as the European Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Bioeconomy and Circular Textiles strategies.

To tackle these challenges will be using alternative crops grown on land unsuitable for food production, applying low-energy, low-chemical processing, and improving how materials are sorted and recycled. The project will deliver a new value chain and a replicable model for circular bioproduct manufacturing that supports the shift toward a sustainable bioeconomy. It will also help increase the use of innovative products and create new opportunities, particularly in vulnerable and rural regions.
